Although there are laws that protect families against the dowry system, it has largely been unsuccessful. There aren’t many reliable numbers since most of the dowry related incidents never reported. Families with daughters don’t have a choice whether to pay dowry or not. Since almost every potential groom and family asks for dowry, parents of the bride must succumb to whatever is demanded.
